Who we are
Established in 2026, our goal is to help people appreciate the beauty and flavor of underappreciated fruit plants, as well as spread the joys and knowledge of native fruit plants as well.
Most people are not aware that North America is home to some of the world’s most delicious fruits! We are confident that a few of North America’s natives are near the tops of your favorites whether it is strawberries, blueberries, raspberries, mulberries, or concord grapes.
However, most people are unaware that these are only scratching the surface of the tasty treats the north has to offer! Some of our favorite hidden gems include pineberries (a white strawberry with a citrusy/pineapple taste), thimbleberries (a more delicate tasing raspberry), hardy passionfruit, and pawpaws (taste like mango-banana ice cream).
Additionally, there are many delicious and even common fruits that are considered locally endangered! There are many fruits that are listed as endangered or threatened in Illinois including the northern gooseberry, the highbush blueberry (the same you buy from the store!), two different species of cranberry, two species of raspberry, and a species of blackberry!
It really is surprising how many fruits that may not be from North America, but still love our climate! Some options are the hardy kiwi, figs, pomegranates, goji berries, and currants, just to name some of the fruits you likely know of already!
