The Rugen’s Improved Alpine Strawberry is an heirloom variety of the native Virginia strawberry, or Fragaria virginiana. Like other alpine strawberry’s, this is very hardy and grows in a clump instead of sending runners. The fruits are much smaller, about the size of a raspberry, but are so incredibly packed with flavor, you won’t care for the supermarket strawberry anymore!
Care requirements:
Growing zone: 4-10, plant may die in colder zones, but readily self-seeds
Sun requirements: Full sun to partial sun
Pollination: Self-fertile
Water: Consistent moisture, without water-logged soil
Size: 1’ clump
Over-wintering: Can left in ground but plant may die below zone 6 but re-seeds. Can be dug-up and separated in fall and moved inside or in garage/shed.
